Here in WA, we’re so lucky to have access to so many beautiful beaches. Whether you’re heading north or south, the expansive coastline makes for some epic swimming, snorkelling and surfing spots – so many that sometimes it’s hard to know what’s out there and where to go!
To help you out, we’ve compiled some of the best spots to swim, surf and snorkel while you’re staying in Lancelin. After all, Lancelin is the ideal middle ground for the ultimate beach holiday – only 1.5 hours north of Perth, whilst still being amidst Australia’s stunning Coral Coast.
Check out the spots below:
Lancelin
Back Beach
Whether you’re an amateur or pro, Back Beach is the surfing hotspot of Lano! It is a beautiful, protected beach accessible from the south end of town.
Never surfed but want to give it a go? Lancelin Surf School is a family-run business that offers private and group surfing lessons for the whole family, or you can hire a board in town and venture out yourself!
Lancelin Back Beach is also a great spot for an evening stroll with your furry friend, for a sunset dip or for sunbathing. In the early morning, you may even spot dolphins from the shoreline.
It gets better… we have a number of homes located literally right on this beautiful beach’s doorstep! Take a browse of the homes here!
Lancelin Beach
Head to the northern end of town and Lancelin Beach is a sight that can’t be missed!
Whether you’re having a fish at the jetty, enjoying a bevy at Endeavour Tavern or Lancelin Sands Hotel, or simply kicking back on the balcony at one of our homes on Gingin Rd – the beauty of Lancelin Beach will be in your sight.
The protected waters of the bay, sheltered by outer reefs and islands, make this beach a popular spot for swimming, snorkelling and paddle boarding.
Lancelin Island
Only 600 metres off the shore of Lancelin Beach, you’ll find Lancelin Island – a Lano icon.
The island is an A-class nature reserve, supporting over 50 plant species and known for hosting visiting sea lions.
If you have a boat, head over and explore the two beaches on the island. You can make a day of it, snorkelling over the reef, exploring the surrounds and enjoying the privacy of the swimming spots!
Don’t have a boat? Check out the vast variety of options offered by Perth Quads Watersports, helping you to get across and see the Island.
Ledge Point
If you’re wanting to venture out and explore the waters somewhere a little different, Ledge Point is just a short drive 10km south of Lancelin.
Ledge Point is known for hosting the famous Ocean Classic wind surfing race, which has been running since 1986.
The race starts in Ledge Point, with contestants racing 25km to the end point in Lancelin. Fun fact: this race holds the Guinness World Record for the longest wind surfing race in the world.
For fishers and 4wd drivers alike, the beach in Ledge is a popular spot for these activities too.
Wedge
Travel 30mins south of Lancelin and you’ll arrive at the well-known Wedge Island Point Beach.
Enjoy pristine sands and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, surfing and snorkelling. As the beach is a little more remote, it is a calmer swimming spot for the whole family.
If you have a 4wd, you can also drive down and park up on the beach, making it easier to set up a tent and have everything you need accessible.
Cervantes
Hangover Bay
One of the most popular beaches in Cervantes, Hangover Bay is a must-visit when in the area!
It’s the perfect spot for a cool down after exploring the Pinnacles, or for a sunbathe after a delicious meal at The Lobster Shack in Cervantes. The ultimate day-trip!
If you’re heading to the Bay directly from Lancelin, allow for approximately a 45-minute drive.
Thirsty Point Lookout
Just a skip, hop and a jump from Hangover Bay and you’ll reach Thirsty Point Lookout – the ideal spot to witness the beauty of the Coral Coast’s amazing coastline.
After taking a dip in the turquoise waters, head up the wooden boardwalk that allows you to traverse the sand dunes to the lookout. Not only is this a great place to watch the windsurfers over the bay, but it is a pretty incredible spot to watch the sunset too.
Hansen Bay
On the southern side of Cervantes, you’ll find Hansen Bay. The Bay curves for over 2.5km, spanning down to its end point at Thirsty Point.
At the south end of the beach you will find calm conditions and low waves, ideal for the little ones.
As for getting there, there are two roads out from Cervantes to the beach access points. There is also a boat launch point and vehicle access available too.
As you can see, the opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and surfing, while staying in Lancelin, are endless!
